HomeAdvisor conducts a survey every year of homeowners across the U.S. who have completed projects within the last 12 months. The survey revealed that homeowners spent an average of $13,138 on home-improvement projects in 2020, compared to $9,081 in 2019. Rising costs for material and labor are contributing factors to the increase in spending. Increased home buying is also a factor, primarily driven by millennials, the oldest of whom are now at or close to the median age of first-time home buyers, according to the National Association of Home Builders.

Home maintenance projects, such as cleaning and landscaping, saw the biggest year-over-year increase, rising from $1,105 in 2019 to $3,192 in 2020. Contributing factors include people using their homes more, resulting in more wear and tear, and spending more time at home, making problems more noticeable.

Home improvement and home emergency spending rose $745

By Lynette L. Walther

Every year, surveys inform us on upcoming trends for the year ahead. Pantone (the publishing color experts) picks for 2021 showcase “hot” colors, such as Lemon Skin and Ultimate Gray, to use for everything from home furnishings to clothing to flowers we grow in our gardens.

Many of us always knew we were ahead of the curve, but it is nice to see the recognition. What’s even nicer is the experience and confidence and results we gain every year we participate in one of the fastest-growing pastimes – its popularity is expanding by leaps and bounds.

Lemon slice calibrachoas are at the top of the trend when it comes to colors for 2021. These cheerful bedding plants from Proven Winners are also top choices for hanging baskets and planters that will bubble over with sizzling, easy-care color.

African violets, popular flowering houseplants in the Gesneriaceae family, are native to the East African nation of Tanzania. Their compact size and variety of flower colors make them a perfect houseplant for small windowsills, desks and countertops in need of a splash of color or life. Their smaller size makes African violets perfect for small spaces in apartments, dorm rooms or other small rooms or nooks.
