Modern Ideas for a Kitchen Nook Area | Home Guides

A kitchen nook is a small space in or near a kitchen separated from the appliances, cupboards, pantry and countertops. Many use kitchen nooks to create small, intimate breakfast areas or small lounge areas. Most kitchen nooks are designed to replace kitchen eating areas, but some are used in conjunction with larger kitchen dining spaces. There are many ways to create a kitchen nook so it provides a warm and friendly meeting spot.

Intimate Dining Area

Create a small, chummy eating area suitable for two to four people. Opt for a small glass or wooden round table because it’s more intimate than square or rectangular styles. Select individual, padded chairs so you and your family can comfortably scoot back from the table to read the newspaper, use electronic tablets or work on handheld crafts. Modern nook styles are often minimalistic, so choose simple wall art, nominal window treatments and basic table decorations so the focus is on intimate discussions and window gazing at the beautiful outdoors.

Reading Room

Design a modern kitchen nook that’s geared toward reading and relaxing. Select two oversized, padded lounge chairs and place them side by side, facing toward one another or at a slight inward-facing

Designing the Modern Quick-Service Restaurant Kitchen

The next stage in the process is “where we really start to formulate ways to turn ideas into reality,” says Carol Davis, FIT Kitchen’s director of business development. This includes workshops, discussions, and even mockups of equipment for systems and solutions that must “maintain or enhance the food quality and maintain the speed” of the kitchen.

Finally, the team creates a full-size replica of the kitchen—using wood and foam core on wheels—at a secret, offsite locale dubbed FIT 51, a humorous take on the Air Force’s highly classified Area 51. “It’s a really efficient way to look at a kitchen model and move things around easily,” Richardson says.

One company nearing the completion of this process is Tampa-based Checkers/Rally’s, which launched its last kitchen design nearly a decade ago.

“That kitchen has continued to evolve,” says Adam Noyes, the company’s chief restaurant operations and supply chain officer. He says the brands have added new processes and technology to deal with stronger sales and new menu items, like their successful slushy line.

The redesign’s research phase includes putting cameras in the restaurants’ kitchens to view the activity there, including at the fry station, which is a particular “pain point” during busy

About Modern Interior Design | Home Guides

Modern interior design has been popular in homes, offices and public spaces for decades. While not suitable for everyone’s tastes, modern design can be a strong selling point for a home, with buyers likely to appreciate the clean lines and simplicity that help define modern design as a major aesthetic style.

Definition

Modern design is difficult to define definitively. The term “modern” refers to the influence of modern art on interior design, but does not necessarily refer to the era or age of the design. Modern design is not the same as contemporary design, which is a term that designers and artists apply to a shifting group of recent styles and trends. Modern design is defined more by its own trends, which have gone largely unchanged for several decades.

History

The modern art movement preceded the trends of modern design. In painting, modernism began with the impressionists and others who used abstraction in their work. Modern interior design grew out of the decorative arts, notably art deco, in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It reached its peak in the 1950s and ’60s, which is why designers and decorators today may refer to modern design as being “mid-century.”

Midcentury Modern Design Truly Soars at Portland’s Boomerang House

A midcentury modern home in the Pacific Northwest that pays homage to Frank Lloyd Wright is ready to swoop into the hands of a new owner.

Known as the Boomerang House, thanks to its unique shape, the home on Skyline Boulevard in Portland, OR, has skimmed onto the market for just under $1.8 million.

“It’s hard to see it necessarily when you’re inside the house, but if you’re looking at it from an aerial point of view, you can totally see that it’s shaped like a boomerang,” explains the listing agent, Mark Bisaccio.

The home was built in 1947, and was completely renovated by the current owners in the past few years. Bisaccio estimates that the owners spent about $700,000 on renovations.

Big changes include the removal of a wall between the kitchen and the living space, the addition of a garage, and the creation of a breezeway between the garage and the home.

“Everybody that sets foot in this house says they absolutely love it,” says Bisaccio. “Nobody walks into this house and says, ‘It’s OK.’ It gets great reactions from everybody.”

Interior Design That Merges Modern and Traditional

I LIKE THINGS that have a little bit of tension,” said interior designer Heidi Caillier. This passion for clashes made her the ideal partner for Jacob Meyer and Margaret Lacy Meyer, a couple with disparate tastes who asked her to help mastermind a renovation of their five-bedroom Craftsman-inflected house in Seattle’s Seward Park neighborhood.

Ms. Lacy Meyer, a psychotherapist from Milwaukee, favors clean midcentury modern design and bold accents, coupled with an earthier West Coast palette. “I’m not a traditionalist,” she said. Her chemist husband, born in rural Gibson, La., is drawn to the dark wood and ornament seen in British décor or—closer to home—the 18th-century Georgian aesthetic that was popular in the American South. “He likes a lot going on,” said Ms. Lacy Meyer of her husband’s design preferences.

Ms. Caillier first created a base of smoky greens and creams, plenty of warm wood, brushed brass and nubbly natural textiles—elements that could engage either client’s taste. She next layered in traditional elements to meet Mr. Meyer’s love of intricacy halfway—but with a modern twist. The formality of the wainscoting in the living and dining rooms, for example, was undercut with a solid wash of an unorthodox shade, Farrow &
