Kate Watson-Smyth’s top 10 hidden design gems for a home update

Interiors guru Kate Watson-Smyth, best known for her top interiors blog Mad About The House, has launched Design Storey, a new online homewares edit store curating her top picks from her favourite high street interiors shops.

During lockdown, our homes have become more important to us than ever, and we’ve all been spending more time looking for special pieces that make our place that bit cosier. But with so much available to us online, finding the perfect finishing touches can become an ordeal in itself – especially as we can’t head to the shop to assess items in person. As such, Design Storey will focus heavily on curation. It’ll feature just 50 items from each category (coffee tables, sofas, chairs, for example), organised by room for ease.

‘There is such a thing as too much choice,’ says Kate. ‘With more people than ever focusing on their homes this past year, most of us just want a good lamp or a nice rug, but we don’t want to spend hours trawling through pages of stuff that we don’t want to find it.’

Each item featured has its own explanation as to why it has made the cut, whether it’s

‘Nearly every surface of every room both in and out of doors was reworked. The aesthetic goal for the home was relaxed luxury and a continuity of strong sculptural form. Craftsmanship was of the utmost importance.’

The finished product – created by designers Tim Pfeiffer and Peak Petersen – boasts a calmness and quiet comfort and merges modern design with heirloom pieces and timeless art.

This classic home in Indiana has been given a modern monochrome update

This design project was a full renovation of a classic colonial home – for a large family in Carmel, Indiana.

There are many variations of colonial style houses, all reflecting the influences of regions that the settlers coming over to the US at the time originated from. This was a style that spanned several decades, starting during the 1600s and lasting until well into the 19th century.

The homeowners had raised their five children here, and they were embarking on a new phase of life as empty nesters. The home needed to transition along with them.

In their desire to create a home that they could comfortably live out the rest of their years, they decided to call in the professionals to finish the job. This is where interior designer Whittney Parkinson steps in.

Whittney began her career as co-owner of the architecture and interior design firm, MAWR Design, working with her father from 2008, until founding Whittney Parkinson Design in 2016.  As a young designer in the field, Whittney designed projects varying from high-end residential to a vast array of multi-million dollar commercial projects around the Midwest.

We speak to Whittney about the design project.
